Notes

  1. Matters Arising (<10 mins) 1400 UK

    • Make sure we invite satellites to next training
    • Emma: we need to figure out who we want to come in what groupings
      • Josh: I thought this was referring to our next regular training, i.e. if we're doing norwich, etc. anyway, get them to come.
      • Emma: ok not clear from the agenda
      • Jason: Why do we want to invite Satellites? What's the rationale?
      • Josh: 1) so they learn OMERO and 2) so they learn how to teach OMERO, since they'll likely want to do their own sessions.
    • J-M: not sure about the second point, it will depend on the usage they have
    • Scott: would that not be better run here where we can create the right training environment ?
    • Andrew: It came from the general thought that some of them would have benifited from doing the omero training before the dev meeting
    • Jason: Based on last training feedback that 2nd day we really define this ahead of time.
    • Josh:Perhaps not. Maybe we just have it on who ever's list of "things to consider" before the next training?
    • Emma: also, we will be working closely with these people so could do on the fly training with them whenever if required
      • Jason: But we could certainly encourage a satellite to come, if appropriate. Yep, so we agree
    • Andrew: put up a paragraph or two about the mtg. as a news story done
    • Josh: look into jabber logging. done
    • Andrew: update team/meetings - done
    • Everyone: Add notes from meeting to this folder
    • Any notes are valuable since discussions were so dispersed.

  3. Accepting minutes from last meeting

  4. Discussion about documentation (20 min) Started at 14:35 UK

    • Decision made on “omero modules”
    • Google Docs
    • Jean-Marie: google docs are becoming as bad as everything else.
      • Andrew: nothing permanent should be on the google docs
      • Simon: alfresco/gdocs for collaboration
      • Andrew: paper and posters (and Jason’s slides) on Alfresco
      • Andrew: hardest to use
      • Jason: problem to respect is that gdoc powerpoints don’t work well online (professional seminar)
    • Training: materials currently under examples/Training
      • Josh: Just leave where they are for now and merge
      • We’ll see during the next training what we need.
      • Jean-Marie: Merge some of the trac page into the comments?
      • Jason: who else has looked at it?
    • Trac+Plone
      • See Josh’s slides
      • Will: Perhaps we do the developer docs first
      • Josh: That’s ok, but let’s have placeholders for the user docs
      • Will: also, we haven’t done the renaming of the plone yet.
      • Jason: have a more user-perspective when doing the plone sitemap
      • Will: like the two different feels of the two sites (clear context)
        • Would like to keep that division.
      • Jean-Marie: have to make sure everybody can run the tool.
      • Curtis: have been using Drupal CMS to a lot of benefit
        • Trac doesn’t have the advantages
        • Reluctant to throw that away for the plone site.
        • Andrew: WYSIWYG is buggy
        • Curtis: module architecture is the other thing.
        • To add rich features, you can.
        • E.g. voting on OMERO scripts
        • Andrew: after having tried to add things to Plone, we decided to not add anything.
          • Upgrades were so difficult.
        • Curtis: haven’t had problems with drupal
        • Josh: good point. Nothing wrong with the CMS as long as we can drop in generated docs
        • Jean-Marie: start with the training info from plone?
        • Sure.
        • Emma: CLS runs on Drupal, so we could have someone talk to us about that.
        • Jean-Marie: good point, be more exposed on the CLS site.
      • Model xsd brower: E.g. OmeModel/Image Started at 15:12 UK
      • Will: had done this a while page and revisited
      • Screenshot on the page, but link to the XSLT-based version.
      • Jason: can send people the URLs for a part of the model? Yeah.
      • Ola: people were asking about how to write queries.
      • Jean-Marie: then need the same thing for the database
      • Jason: great. Where should it live?
        • Jean-Marie: dynamic on the website. Like the validator.
        • Andrew: xslt with everything in one file?
      • Josh: like it. But if it’s official, we need to test it.
        • Will: haven’t checked that everything is present for all elements.
          • Using conventions
      • Scott: will it have a link from the plone page to trac?
        • > <
        • ul>
        • Conclusion: continue developing
    • Review of Satellite Meeting - Discussion with Jason (20 mins)

      • Andrew: gave us an understanding of everyone’s assumptions/expectations
      • We might have influenced the conversations
      • Some of the topics from the slides didn’t get installed.
      • Jason: Difficulty of pay-grades, etc.
      • Jason: Format? 2 days?
      • Emma: 1.5 would have been good (partly due to the heat)
      • Ola: Good to have Melissa, Josh, Carlos around is good
      • Jason for Johannes: issues with IT
      • Jason: need to do another one
      • Andrew: same people again?
      • Andrew: have separate talk sessions and only get altogether for lunch, etc.
      • Jean-Marie: Have to be careful about not putting people in a box.
      • Emma: plus new people at some point.
      • Carlos: general (large) presentations isn’t the best use of time
      • don’t like each mini-group being on its own, either
      • Worked best personally was group of chairs with specific themes
        • Some people jumped around.
      • All the knowledge was there, but didn’t need everyone to be focused at one time.
      • Jean-Marie: agreed, but too long (by that time we’d been through too much)
      • Jason: we will bring different groups back for concrete development work.
      • Elwood: good to have small show-case sessions again? Probably.
        • Jean-Marie: could even have users who are interested.
        • Jason: perhaps one-day of presentations, then schedule for the next day or two of real work
          • Have been to meetings of the sessions that each person wants to run
    • Any other business (<5 mins) Started at 15:43 UK

      • Davey on www?
      • Next 2-3 meetings?
        • Colin is next week
        • December: nothing scheduled.
      • What is appropriate notification method for mini-group meetings?
        • Ola: not ome-devel
        • Issue: missing out on people who aren’t on nitpick.
        • Ola: Are they interested in templates?
        • Jason: isn’t it their job?
        • Josh ...
        • Ola: * need to do better join on the milestone, they can see the stories, etc. * web developers internal meeting. decided next 6-7 requirements (6 months+) * what we’re trying to do and the details are in the ticket. * if someone is not sure what’s going on, then ask. * web-team@: don’t want alias to duplicate omero-team@ * what’s the purpose of people coming there? 4-5 people talking about technical details. * Will: can send it to nitpick. Convenient. Not really inviting everyone.
        • Jason: spirit of what Josh is saying is “invitation” v. “announcement”
          • won’t be able to anticipate what they’re doing
          • serendipity can only happen if it’s not by invitation-only
        • Will: more important to keep in touch with them
          • Have meetings with them where we invite them.
          • Jean-Marie: if a satellite is waiting on a feature, planning my work around it and then it gets pushed (“3 weeks”)
            • When do they have a chance to ask why?
        • Simon: what happens if the feedback is that “half of our stuff’s not on there”
        • ...lots of discussion...
        • something between ome-nitpick (holidays) and ome-devel (all devs)
        • ome-project@...
        • Scott: do we need to be on any mailing list for the institutions?
        • web-team time: Jason would like to come. 3 UK Mon is group meeting. Earlier is hard.
          • Carlos can only come after lunch.
          • 1630 UK? …
      • Merging scifio branch to develop
        • Curtis: any objections? Just got busy yesterday.
        • Chris? Don’t know if he’s looked at it.
        • Jason: contact him directly. (Flying back on the 18th)
        • Melissa: rebasing off of develop helped.
        • Curtis: sending to Chris just to confirm.
      • Feedback on devteam housecleaning (Will)
      • Emma: There were some that were better discussed.
      • Josh: perhaps be quicker to push to AOCB
      • Will: took longer and wasn’t able to do work at desk anyway.
      • Jason: don’t see how it can work.
      • Emma: people will need to have looked before hand.
      • Andrew: but email only gets put in a few minutes before hand.
      • Colin: was about housekeeping while other people hadn’t joined; and/or sitting around without people there.
      • Emma: may be have been more enjoyable sitting in the room.
      • Andrew: ASCB poster. Design for scratch?
      • Reduce text content? Yes.
      • Send suggestions to Andrew
      • iPads to give away at the JCB booth
    • Done at 16:30 UK
