Notes

  1. Accepting minutes from last meeting

  2. Matters Arising (<10 mins)

    • Jason: Contact satellites about meeting dates DONE
    • Andrew: remove ome-xml.org - #5157 to add tasks to 4.3.3 sprint DONE
    • Colin: Add documentation, how to exclude file extension using dropdox config
      • There is no ticket, Colin will comment on existing ticket associated with that problem.
    • Elwood & Andrew: chase insight bugs found during testing/videos (include/exclude from 4.3.3 decission) ajp - done, elwood - done
    • Andrew: Print A3 poster so we can annotate it. done
    • Andrew: Confirm sizes (ASCB: 3'8" (1.1 m) high by 6' (1.828 m) wide, GRE: waiting reply) PENDING
      • J-M: Are we registered?
      • Chris: is very big size
      • Andrew is waiting for confirmation from GRE. ASCB can print it for $80 but it has to be ready ahead of time.
    • Jason: Add events dates and abstract deadlines to calendar DONE
    • All: look for Development or Database meetings
      • Chris: collect meetings we want to go and put them on the list. Then we will decide where we want to go. Jason had a list of scientific meetings (e.g. image processing, computer vision) where it makes sense to go.
  3. Training Days and Remote Desktop Postmortem

    • Training

      • Ola put the Feedback training google doc to put feedback.

      • Day One

        • J-M:
          • Had to use remote desktop on day 1 strait away.
          • Mark commented it was faster than internal training room infrastructure (projector was connected to spear monitor in between each workstation.
          • Need to bring test images (add to remote desktop as they did not bring their data)
          • Some brought data day 2, have some problems files to work on.
          • Mounting local drive on Remote? Chris: Yes can configure.

            • We need to work out on configuration: credentials, simple password, etc. Just details
          • Need to conform local IT support.
          • Too much for unskilled IT users - need to cut down material
          • The group represents different levels of IT skills. We need to improve the training materials to organize it in terms of people skills and how advance they are with using OMERO.
        • Andrew: Were people happy of what was presented in first day.
        • J-M:
          • Some users did not have basic computer skills and were not best suited to this style of course - would need 1-on-1 training.
          • Provided some hand holding, but not a good use of trainers time.
          • There were some confusions with ImageJ export, they thought it will go to OMERO.
          • Remote desktop was very good.
        • Chris:
          • For some reason, for the first time you log in it takes 2-3 minutes to create local profile.
        • J-M:
          • We were talking about VM. Some people downloaded it strait away to the laptop. They were very happy of that solution. They were complaining about root password only
        • Scott:
          • Too hot. No coffee organised. No cups for water. No lunch organised.
      • Day Two

        • J-M: Two people with poor computer skills showed up on the next day. They couldn’t follow.
        • Ola: Some people left as they realised not for them.
        • J-M: Mostly MatLab people. No one doing python in the room. Java mostly CRUK.
          • In terms of examples, we showed how to get data out. That was not exactly natural how do we get data that way. It is not natural that people have to go to few different places to get information about the same object (You showed me how to get data, but to get PixelData I need to go to the different place). Too many services.
        • Chris: We got much better infrastructure in Python, but not MatLab and Java.
        • J-M: but requirement was MatLab, the most.
        • J-M: scripts across the Languages looks similar, but not the same.
        • J-M: some diversions between Insight and Web scripting (icons, place, etc.) If we want keep both client consistent, we should do it as we push new feature to the other client. Otherwise we put people in uncomfortable position.
        • J-M: There were some questions again how to manipulate model objects. There is no help capability in MatLab. For the key section we should have good explanation in documentation.
        • J-M: If want code to run on server and do not have code then start in python as deploy to server will be much simpler. Existing code can be wrapped in python if necessary.
        • J-M: We showed python example int he afternoon.
        • J-M: we didn’t know there would be EM people. For the EM section there were person who wanted to have a list of aspects to convince people to use OMERO. To show them this is useful for them.
        • Chris: While you and Josh were away forum was full of new posts. We need to decide if we want to help those people or fix the tool.
        • Chris: If people have not need for data management and have satisfying way of storing data. It will be very difficult to convince them to use OMERO.
        • Chris: Need local person to run the event. We can provide everything BUT in that case need to canvas all participants in ourselves, and charge accordingly.
          • Cannot try and arrange on the day.
        • J-M: People who stayed are people providing work for biologists.
        • Chris: Corporate training visitors usually only work with 8-10 people. Difficult to tailor a course for larger number of people.
        • J-M: Did not know support we would have to provide for day 1.
        • Chris: you always have a people who shop up on the day not spending any time before hand.
        • Andrew: referring to the previous point: All posts to Jacki Goldman on lists have got replies from team.
        • Ola: Problem with velocity files. Large dataset. Ola will send email to user as need full dataset. Will try and arrange to get files from user. Perhaps just post us a disc. Or Dropbox?
        • Andrew: We need to provide document with the basic requirements like, hospitality, lunch slots, technically requirements, etc.
        • Will: maybe two days is too short to run that sort of course.
        • Chris/J-M: we need to organise group better, to know who is coming and what they expectations are.
      • Overall

      • Feedback and post-training survey

      • Improvements for next time?

      • Training Materials (revisions and maintenance plan)

        • J-M: Sample files: we have to find the location, address licensing issue.
        • Andrew: what about HTML pages on o.org. How to maintain versioning.
        • J-M: we should have all the materials for all versions.
        • Chirs: we do not have enough staff and resources to update it. We are not going to run training on the old version of OMERO.
        • J-M: for now we are going to leave them were they are and reorganize them.
        • Chirs: what about sample file instruction in google doc. People have already ask me about it.
        • J-M: we can generate pdf from google doc.
        • Chirs: we need to take this google doc and put it somewhere in the public page.
        • Will: Martin is going to collect feedback from people directly.
        • Scott: He is going to correspond individually with attendance. This is better chance to get more feedback about details.
        • J-M: There is google doc with comments/improvement for UI.
    • Remote desktop

      • Technical
      • Licences issues
      • What is the way forward?
        • Chirs: I had to turn it off. Should I nuke it down. YES.
        • J-M: we possibly should keep gretzky accounts for future usage
        • Andrew: There is a problem if we want to do it in the future.
        • Chris: If we are going to do MatLab training again we have to sort out license in advance (deadline!). That might include contacting them directly to ask for 30 days license for course. The same apply for RDC licenses. We should pay licenses for RDC.
        • Chris: are there any specific users you (Scott) want to follow up?
        • Scott: only the one form EM.
  4. Glencoe Update

    • Chris: we discussed OMERO.web 4.3/4.4 integration. GitHub integration that everyone can see that, to be able easily merge in.
    • Chris: commercial site will be upgraded to 4.3
  5. Minigroup Updates - none this week

  6. Sprint Status

    • J-M: do we need any extra week for sprint 6 going side by side with 7 to finish tickets?

      • Chris: this might make a bad impression when externals look at this.
      • Will, Chris: there is a bug which prevents to make the collaborative movie. There is extensive lack of collaborative work between clients including bug. Will is going to merge those two tickets and make one movie about collaborative work and tagging all together.
      • Other 5 tickets in progress will be finished today.
      • Chris is going to work on #6779 to get this story finished.
      • J-M is going to extend Sprint 6 to go side by side with 7.

    • Strategy for 4.3.2 for GitHub

      • Chris: We have already been using Pull request with Will. If we continuity then we will know what to push.
