3. OMERO in Action: Jerome's discussion (20 mins)

   • Overview

     • Has been working on DMBI for a year (funded by JIST)
     • Have to produce reusable materials as a part of the grant
       • OMERO training materials
       • span out to "in action" event and day of lectures
     • April lectures with 7 speakers
       • • 2 day workshop on OMERO
     • Have a nice teaching facilty
     • 58 delegates for talks, 7 speakers, 3 trainers coming, 50% local, 50% (mainly UK)
       • 23 for workshop
     • Lecture day is going to be free through teaching funding

   • Goal: discuss workshop items

     • Wants to pick brains (looking for feedback)

     • Q: Any existing materials?

       • We've done nothing on this scale, but related items
       • Most organized demo recently was in France
         • Single laptop server with many clients
         • Also demos at ASCB meeting

     • We do have pamphlets, decorations, roller displays, lanyards, small number of t-shirts

     • @@Have people send their T-shirt sizes

     • @@Have people bring data (will have some sample data just in case)

     • Suggestions from Team:

       • Chris: Might be nice to have some specific workflows (HCS for example)
       • Brian: CLI tools
       • Jason: Bio-formats in general

     • Jerome: mixed crowd - some developers, some users (higher proption)

     • JMB: Which version are you going to use? Newer version with bug fixes?

       • Jerome: Could go both ways. Not 100% sure (don't know what's in the new version)
       • JMB: Need to decide what servers to set up, etc.

     • Jason: How many of these visitors are develpers?

       • Jerome: Only 2 or 3 - some 'matlab' users
       • Jason: May want to just take them aside and cater to their needs 'on the side'
       • Jason: We found its worth the time to set up a server with data, groups, etc in advance
       • Chris: 23 people on the server may be a lot for a demo server - keep that in mind
       • Chris: Need to make sure we don't 'mix up the clients' a lot (can get confusing)
       • Jason: About the version thing: Nothing more annoying then frequent crashes
         • Chris: Realistically I don't see us using 4.3 for this
         • Jason: At the very latest need things sent to Jerome by end of March
       • Jason: 2 days is about right, maybe spend a full morning to OMERO.editor
         • Second day cover matlab, scripting, etc.
       • Jason: Melissa, does cellprofiler 2.0 have bio-formats built in? M: believe so
         • Jerome: Never touched it, will need to. Should contact them
       • Chris: For me, ending the meeting with 'real world examples' would make sense
         • Scott: Would be nice to finish with 'what's coming next'
       • Chris: If Jerome sets up an outline, can help to flesh it out
       • Jerome: Was thinking of doing a wiki for all this, then getting OMERO team feedback
       • Jason: Wireless and connectivity good there? Jerome: Yes
       • JMB: Need to think about 'follow up'. Need to discuss how to reach community.
         • Jerome: Yes, where forums are, mailing list, documentation, etc
       • Scott: Would be good to collecting some 'scientist feedback' from this - can go to this
         • Chris: Would be good for them to see funcationality,
           • then Scott gets feedback on day 1
           • then show where to get that functionality on day 2
           • Jerome: One thing we did do was set up a form of questions (sign-in form)
             • will try to summerize that data for OMERO team
       • Jerome: Will revise schedule based on this feedback and get back to us
         • Chris: Next Tuesday? Jerome: Sounds fine
       • Andrew: Need some photographs taking at the event
       • Scott: Would be good to get Michael there
         • Will: Would be good to have a scientist there talking to other scientists
         • JMB: What message do we want to send (with a scientist)? Is it beneficial?
         • Chris: Nice to have real scientist doing real work. Is that better then having a dev?
